10 Banana Muffin Recipes that Are Healthy, Sweet, and Easy to Make

Muffins are a joy to make in the kitchen, and bananas are the sugar of nature. These two combined are what heaven in the kitchen tastes like. Being able to prepare such a sweet recipe every morning or afternoon, with as few ingredients as possible and quick prep time is what you need.

That is why I have put together a list of 10 banana muffin recipes that I consider to be the very best. This list has something for everyone; vegan, vegetarians, and dessert-driven people like me.

The recipes are as sweet as possible so that even if your kids are picky eaters, they can’t say no to these muffins.

1 – Perfect Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

Ingredients

  • 4 Very Ripe Bananas
  • 1/3 cup melted butter cooled
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup Ghirardelli semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. Grease your muffin tins
  3. Peel bananas and throw them in a big bowl with the melted butter and smash it all together with a fork.
  4. Keep blending until the mixture is creamy and smooth, not chunky.
  5. Add sugar, egg, and vanilla and mix just until combined.
  6. Stir in salt and baking soda.
  7. Add flour and chocolate chips and mix until just combined. Do not overmix!
  8. Divide into muffin tins.

  1. 2 – Moist Banana Muffins

    Probably one of the easiest recipes you can find anywhere is the moist banana muffin recipe. It does not even take much time of your day to prepare and will likely be your go-to when you are lazy. (Original Recipe from The DIY Lighthouse)

Ingredients:

BOWL #1

  • 1 and 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

BOWL #2

  • 3 very ripe (browning or brown) bananas mashed (you can just use a fork to mash)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

How to Make:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350ºF.
  2. Line your muffin baking tin with paper baking cups, or lightly grease your muffin tin.
  3. In a bowl, mix together the ingredients for bowl #1.
  4. In another larger bowl, mix together the ingredients for bowl #2. (No beater necessary.)
  5. Fold the mixture from bowl #1 into bowl #2.
  6. Scoop your muffin batter into your muffin cups using a 1/4 cup measuring cup. (I love using my rubber spatula to help get out all the batter.)
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes. (When muffins are done they will have started turning light golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin will come out clean.)
  8. Place the muffins on a cooling rack. Enjoy!

    3 – Banana Oatmeal Muffins

    I always a good day when my bananas are mixed with oatmeals in a muffin that makes my day happier. It is very simple and I don’t have to wait a long time to enjoy these muffins. (Original Recipe from Well Plated)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups oats (quick cooking or old fashioned)
  • 2 large very ripe bananas
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey*
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder (I prefer aluminum free)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Up to 1/2 cup mix-ins: chocolate chips (mini or regular), chopped dark chocolate, nuts, dried cranberries, or blueberries (fresh or frozen and rinsed)

How to Make:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly grease a 12-cup standard muffin tin or line with paper liners. If using liners, lightly grease them as well. Set aside.
  2. Place all ingredients but the mix-ins in a blender or the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade: oats, bananas, eggs, Greek yogurt, honey, baking powder, baking soda, vanilla extract, and salt. Blend or process on high, stopping to scrape down and stir the ingredients once or twice as needed until the batter is smooth and the oats have broken down almost completely about 3 minutes. By hand, stir in the mix-ins. If the batter is warm from the appliance’s motor, the chocolate chips may melt and swirl as they are stirred. If this bothers you, let the batter cool for 10 minutes before adding them.
  3. Divide the batter among the prepared muffin cups, filling each no more than three-quarters of the way to the top. Sprinkle with additional chocolate chips or nuts as desired. Bake for 15 minutes, until the tops of the muffins, are set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Place the pan on a wire rack and let the muffins cool in the pan for 10 minutes. They will deflate but still taste delicious. Remove from the pan and enjoy!

4 – Skinny Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins

The sweetness of chocolate chips and bananas made healthy as a new years resolution muffin recipe. You can make this recipe under 30 minutes and enjoy it all day long. (Original Recipe from Oh My Goodness Chocolate Desserts)

Ingredients:

  • 1 and 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups mashed bananas (3 medium bananas)
  • 4 Tablespoons honey
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon-optional
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (nonfat)
  • 1 Tablespoon soy or almond milk
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips (you can substitute with chopped nuts)

How to Make:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F and spray 12 cup standard muffin tin or 24 cup mini muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray. I used a mini muffin tin.
  2. In a bowl whisk dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl mash bananas, add honey, oil, vanilla, milk, Greek yogurt, and egg. Mix until well combined and smooth. You can use an electric mixer or whisk by hand.
  4. Add dry ingredients and mix (or whisk)until just combined.
  5. Fold in chocolate chips.
  6. Fill muffin tin with batter almost to the top. Bake until the toothpick inserted in the muffin comes out almost clean (with a few crumbs attached). It takes about 20-25 minutes for regular sized muffins or 14-16 minutes for mini muffins. Cool the muffins for 5 minutes in the pan then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

5 – Strawberry Chocolate Banana Muffins

Strawberries are sweet. Chocolate, too. Bananas, them too. Mixing them all together in one muffin and enjoy the best muffin recipe that you think of. (Original Recipe from Searching for Spice)

Ingredients:

  • 2 bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 100ml vegetable oil
  • 30ml milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 180g self-raising flour
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 45g cocoa powder
  • 170g caster sugar
  • 200g strawberries, quartered (or halved if they are small)

How to Make:

  1. Using a fork, mash the bananas in the bottom of a large mixing bowl until they have become a puree.
  2. Add all the rest of the ingredients, except the strawberries. Sift in the cocoa powder if it is lumpy. Fold together until everything is just combined. Don’t overmix. Fold in the strawberry pieces.
  3. Line a muffin tin with muffin cases.
  4. Put a couple of spoonfuls of mixture into each case. The cases should be about two thirds full.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 160C for 20 minutes.
  6. Cool for a few minutes in the tin then transfer the muffins to a wire rack to finish cooling.

6 – Banana Brown Sugar Muffins

This is a muffin that is even sweeter than you would expect but still is healthy for your to have at breakfast. That’s why you should try it as soon as possible.(Original Recipe from Who Needs a Cap?)

Ingredients:

  • 1 3/4 C flour
  • 1/2 C brown sugar (plus more)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/4 C vegetable oil
  • 1/2 C milk
  • 3/4 C mashed bananas

How to Make:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  2. Spray muffin tins with non-stick cooking spray
  3. In a medium bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Make a well in the center of mixture.
  4. In another bowl combine egg, milk, oil, and bananas.
  5. Dump wet mixture into the well of dry mix. Stir (do not over stir) until everything is moistened. It will be lumpy that’s ok
  6. Spoon into muffin tins
  7. Top each muffin with about 1 tsp of brown sugar
  8. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until tooth pick comes out clean

7 – Gluten-free Banana Muffins

On the very healthy side of things, this gluten-free muffin recipe is something to die for. You don’t only enjoy a good, sweet muffin, but there is no guilt or shame with it. (Original Recipe from My Gluten-free Kitchen)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups good all-purpose gluten-free flour blend
  • 1 tsp. xanthan gum
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, room temp, or non-dairy substitute
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large overripe bananas, mashed (=about 1 cup)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or non-dairy substitute

How to Make:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°. Line muffin pan cavities with paper liners and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together gluten-free flour, xanthan gum, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In the bowl of your stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar for 1 minute.
  4. With the mixer running on low speed, add the eggs one at a time.
  5. Add vanilla extract, mashed bananas, and buttermilk and beat on high for 1 minute.
  6. Add half of the flour mixture into the banana mixture and mix on low speed until mixed in. Repeat with remaining flour mixture. Mix for another 30 seconds, or until dry ingredients are mixed in.
  7. Use a large cookie or ice cream scoop to fill muffin cavities 3/4 full. Using my scoop, I usually get around 17-18 muffins.
  8. Bake at 325° for about 18-22 minutes, until tops have browned and muffins check done. Depending on the size you make them and how hot your oven runs, the baking temperature will vary. Use the toothpick test to check for doneness. A toothpick inserted in the center of a fully cooked muffin will come out with moist crumbs attached.
  9. Cool in muffin pan for 5 minutes, then remove muffins to cool on a cooling rack. When muffins are room temperature, you can store in an airtight container or place in freezer in a gallon freezer bag.

8 – One Bowl Double Chocolate Banana Muffins

More chocolate, more bananas, more taste; yet, it is still one the healthiest recipes on this list. It is vegan, gluten and dairy-free. So, enjoy (again) this sweet recipe without any guilt.(Original Recipe Beaming Baker)

Wet Ingredients

  • 3 medium, very ripe bananas (a little over 1 cup)
  • ¼ cup melted coconut oil
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • ¼ cup coconut sugar
  • 1 flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flax + 3 tablespoons water, whisk together, set for 5 mins)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups gluten free oat flour
  • ¾ cup almond meal
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Add-ins

  • ½ cup vegan chocolate chips
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons assorted vegan chocolate chips for topping

How to Make:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a standard 12-muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  2. Peel bananas and add to a large mixing bowl. Using a sturdy whisk or fork, mash bananas until completely smooth. Add the rest of the wet ingredients: coconut oil, maple syrup, sugar, flax egg, and vanilla. Whisk until well incorporated.
  3. Add all dry ingredients: oat flour, almond meal, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk together until just incorporated, making sure no flour patches remain. Be careful not to overmix.
  4. Pour batter evenly into cupcake liners. Optional: sprinkle chocolate chips on top of the muffins.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
  6. Place the muffin pan on a cooling rack. Allow to cool for about 1 hour. Lift out and enjoy!

9 – Banana Bread & Chocolate Muffins

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup mashed banana (approximately 2 to 3 medium bananas)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled

How to Make:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare muffin pans by lining 12 muffin cups with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the butter until smooth, and then beat in the sugar until light and fluffy. Blend in the egg, vanilla, mashed bananas, and sour cream until fully incorporated (batter may look curdled at this point…it will smooth out with addition of flour). Gently mix in the dry ingredients until just blended.
  3. Scoop half of the batter into a second bowl. Stir the melted unsweetened chocolate into one of the bowls of batter until fully incorporated.
  4. Use a spoon (or small cookie scoop) to scoop plain banana batter into half of a muffin liner. Use another spoon to scoop chocolate batter into the other half of the muffin liner. Repeat until all twelve muffin liners are full. (Alternatively, you may layer and/or swirl the batter with a toothpick for marbled muffins.)
  5. Bake muffins for 17 to 20 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center just comes out clean. Cool muffins in the pans for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling completely.

10 – Avocado Banana Muffins

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 2 ripe medium bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1tsp vanilla
  • 2 Cups standard flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup dark choc chips

How to Make:

  1. Add the avocado, banana, eggs, honey, and vanilla to a food processor or blender
  2. Blitz until smooth
  3. In a large bowl sift the flour and baking powder, if you can’t be bothered sifting just make sure you fork through the baking powder so it is well mixed
  4. Add the avocado and banana mix to the dry ingredients including the chocolate chips
  5. mix gently until just combined (this is the secret of a good muffin texture, do not over mix them)
  6. Spoon into a greased or lined 12 hole muffin tin
  7. Bake at 180°C for 20-25 mins
  8. Leave to cool in the tray before you attempt removing them
  9. Serve and Yum
